This series consists of memoranda, historical files, photographs, reports, standard operating procedures, organization manuals, and general orders of the Charleston Port of Embarkation (POE) in Charleston, South Carolina. The historical files include annual narrative histories of the POE and its organizations such as the Women's Army Corps (WAC) and the Chemical Warfare Division. The photographs depict equipment, activities, and personnel at the POE, including WAC units and basketball games, wheeled amphibious landing craft, small seagoing vessels, hospital ships, and wounded servicemen. One of the photographs shows British Captain Colin Montgomery, the chaplain of the British hospital ship “Dorsetshire” and brother of Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery.

The Women's Army Corps (WAC) was the women's branch of the US Army. It was created as an auxiliary unit, the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps in 1942, and converted to full status as the WAC in 1943. Its first director was Oveta Culp Hobby, the wife of a prominent politician and publisher in Houston, Texas. About 150,000 American women served in the WAAC and WAC during World War II.
